As you may know, Christmas is the biggest holiday in many Western countries, including the US and the UK. Decorating Christmas trees, giving gifts and singing Christmas carols are just a few of the traditions the two nations share. However, just as there are many cultural differences between the two, Christmas is not exactly the same on both sides of the Atlantic. Today, let’s look at both the differences and similarities.

Language:

First of all, the language of Christmas is not strictly the same in the US and the UK. Let’s hear what our UK journalist Dale Fox has to say about this.

Dale: A huge difference is the name of the white-bearded man. Brits call him “Father Christmas,” whereas Americans call him “Santa Claus” or just “Santa”. Besides, Americans will just look confused if you wish them “Happy Christmas”. They prefer to say “Merry Christmas”. And according to the BBC, the shortening of Christmas to “Chrimbo” is widely unknown to people in the US.

Food:

That sounds really interesting, doesn’t it? But what about food? In the US, a proper Christmas dinner probably won’t have turkey. That’s because we Americans usually roast a turkey just once a year for Thanksgiving. So on Christmas Day, we prefer ham or roast beef. As for desserts, British prefer to eat Christmas cake, pudding and mince pies, according to the BBC. In the US, however, Americans love pie and ice cream, even in wintertime. Christmas desserts include pumpkin, apple and pecan pie. The adults might drink coffee, eggnog or spiced wine.

Decorations:

Besides just the language and food, Christmas decorations are also a big deal in both countries. Every home will have a Christmas tree - big or small, real or plastic. The most common type of tree is an evergreen pine. It fills the home with the fresh smell of pine. For many American and British families, picking out and decorating the tree is an annual tradition. Christmas tree decorations include holly, ornaments and colorful lights. Either a star or an angel is put on top of the tree, symbolizing the true meaning of Christmas.

Christmas Carols and Cartoons:

Every year when Christmas season comes around, both Americans and British love to sing Christmas carols, such as Silent Night and O Little Town of Bethlehem. Perhaps the most popular ‘Christmas carol’ is actually a story called A Christmas Carol, written by British author Charles Dickens in 1843. English speakers everywhere love this timeless tale.

O little Town of Bethlehem《伯利恒小镇》。

In the US, children and teenagers also love to watch their favorite Christmas cartoons. Classic animations include Rudolf the Red-Nosed ReindeerFrosty the Snowman, A Charlie Brown Christmas and Dr. Seuss’ How the Grinch Stole Christmas! These TV specials were all released in the US in the 1960s and are still popular today. Newer Christmas classics includeThe Polar Express and Ice Age.

经典的卡通片包括Rudolf the Red-Nosed Reindeer《红鼻子驯鹿鲁道夫》, Frosty the Snowman《冰雪人》, A Charlie Brown Christmas《查理布朗的圣诞节》 和Dr. Seuss’ How the Grinch Stole Christmas《圣诞怪杰》!

Thanks for watching and merry Christmas!
